You’re in the right place

Sound familiar?

The house felt right. The land is more of a mystery.

“I’ve got a field. Am I meant to be cutting it?”

“There’s a pond. I’m not sure what a healthy one looks like.”

“I’d love a couple of animals. Where do I even start?”

“It’s a big garden that isn’t really a garden.”

You don’t have to become an expert. You just need a friendly place to start.

A person, not a big company

Hello. I’m Tom.
I’m here to help.

I’m Tom, the person behind The Acres Guide. My background is in land management, conservation, forestry and practical countryside work, and I love wildlife and practical land care. I’ll explain things plainly, help you find a manageable next step, and tell you when you don’t need to spend money.

I offer site visits across North West England, North Wales and Yorkshire, including Cheshire and Lancashire. If you’re further afield, we can work remotely.

You’ll come away knowing what’s essential, what’s optional and what can simply wait — in words that make sense to you, so your time and money go where they make a real difference.

Wildlife and nature

Bring more wildlife to your land.

I love wildlife and practical land care, and helping people make room for nature is one of the best parts of this work. Whatever land you have, there are realistic, cost-effective steps that make a genuine difference.

Wildflower and wildlife meadows

Turning part of a field, paddock or lawn into a wildflower or wildlife meadow, with honest advice about what results to expect and when.

Pollinator-friendly areas

Practical ways to help bees, butterflies and other pollinators — choosing the right plants, leaving the right areas alone and cutting out unnecessary work.

Habitat improvement

Hedgerows, ponds, deadwood and rough corners that give birds, insects and other wildlife a home while keeping your land manageable.

Wildlife work doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ll help you choose the steps that give the most benefit for your time and money.
